Chess marathon fundraiser friday saturday

Rudy Abate, president of the N.C. Chess Association and avid encourager for the game in the community, is holding a fundraiser for Michael Brown, a Vance Charter School eighth-grader with a rare form of bone cancer. From 6 Friday night until 6 on Saturday night, Abate will play chess for 24 consecutive hours against all comers at the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall. He is soliciting monetary sponsors in advance and during the event for each hours he plays. Brown plans to play the first game against Abate to kick off the event. Zoning Board Hears Schools Plan

Mar. 05, 2013 @ 07:04 PM MARTIN FISHER Henderson Collegiate public charter school took a giant step forward Tuesday in their plan to begin teaching to grade 7 and grow by another 100 students next year. The plan is for a 45,000 square-foot, two-story new school construction off McArthur Street in the South Henderson area that would allow the school to fill out as a 500-student middle school for grades 4-8. Grant For Area Teachers

by ALLIE RAE MAUSER 11.29.12 each for America in eastern North Carolina recently received increased funding with a $100,000 grant from the Golden Leaf Foundation. The money is expected to support recruitment for a greater number of Teach for America teachers in Vance, Warren, and Granville counties. “It’s used for recruitment selection, training, and support of teachers in the rural counties of which we work,” said Robyn Fehrman, executive director of Teach for America eastern North Carolina.
